A Post and a New Avtar

I know I know…I said I was back…and then I vanished 😀 But I just couldn’t get myself to write…there wasn’t much going on or anything except for me being lazy…but hey…I’ve seen some wonderful things happening during my break from blogging…and one of them being Barack Obama winning the US elections. How wonderful is that? I do not expect him to bring any drastic changes to the world (and neither do I live in the US) but just the fact that a black man (or a mixed race man) could make it to the White House sounds exciting. History turns full circle and makes us believe that if you have the will, anything’s possible.

If I am not wrong…it’s been a year since I started this blog. It survived for 365 days which is shocking 😉 I’ve never dedicated myself to anything for so long. Even though I ditched my blog for some other stuff in life, it always managed to pull me back…and mostly because of the lovely comments people leave. Keep ’em coming!!

Life’s changed for the good after moving. Made some wonderful friends, social life’s fantastic, fantastic restraus nearby, great sights but weather as always has been crap!!!! Nevertheless, I am trying to see the positives in life…and I shall continue to do so 😀

I’ve updated my photoblog too…do take a look 🙂

Ciao 🙂

A Woman Among Warlords

…..a Woman Among Warlords follows the campaign of a woman running in Afghanistan’s first democratic parliament election in more than 30 years. 27 year-old Malalai Joya, one of the country’s most famous (and controversial) women since 2003 challenged the power of warlords in national politics. Forced to live in hiding and surrounded by armed guards, Joya conducts her parliamentary campaign in the remote desert province of Farah, the heart of poverty in Afghanistan. Despite death threats and assassination attempts, Joya continues to meet with clan leaders, opium kings, and adolescent girls pressured to marry older men. Six years after a U.S.-led coalition overthrew the Taliban, WIDE ANGLE provides unique insight into the politics and culture of a nation almost ruined by war, still ruled by fear, but desperate for change. A Woman Among Warlords is the television version of the celebrated documentary Enemies of Happiness, a film by Danish director Eva Mulvad……

I watched this documentary on More4 couple of days ago and had been wanting to write about it. We came back after watching Mongol. It was 11 PM…our bedtime. I still had some last minute stuff to sort out when I switched on the tv. I put a reminder for this particular show and was glad I didn’t miss it. The documentary finished at 12.20 AM and both of us were wide awake and S usually dozes off by 10.

There were tears rolling down my eyes. We watched the documentary in awe of the woman, Malalai Joya. Often, we are not grateful for what we have and who we are and this documentary makes us realise just how blessed we are.

It’s true…when the going gets tough…only the tough get going and Malalai Joya is a fine example of this. She is all of 29 and dreams of a better future for her country. In a male-dominated society, she is fearless, strong and out-spoken. She is the voice of thousands of Afghani women who lead a life if desperation…in search of justice and hope. Inspite of innumerable death threats…she still fights for her and the rights of other Afghani women and children.

I RECOMMEND EVERYONE TO WATCH THE DOCUMENTARY. NOT JUST WOMEN. IT’S AN INSPIRATIONAL STORY FOR ALL.

Movie Review: Sex and the City

Like I mentioned in my previous post, I wasn’t sure if I’d like the movie. I am not a huge of the show but I am relieved to say I enjoyed it. I was in a pretty bad mood before I walked into the screen…and when I am in a bad mood…trust me…it’s BAD!!! Infact, I was even contemplating on leaving the cinema even before the movie begined but forced myself to sit after some cajoling from S.

Coming to the movie…it starts off with the introduction of the four women, Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall), Charlotte York (Kirstin Davis) and Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon). Like the show, the film deals with two of the most complex issues…love and relationships 😛

In brief, Mr. Big (Chris North), Carrie’s 45+ ‘man’friend proposes to Carrie in a very unconventional manner and they are ready to be married but is devestated when Mr. Big does not turn up on the big day.

Samantha moves to LA to support and work for Jerry ‘Smith’ Jerrod (Jason Lewis) and misses NY. Jerry is busy with work and Samantha craves to be with her friends. There’s also a sexy hunk who moves next door and she is finding it difficult to control her urges 😉

Miranda is the usual…a workaholic. Her husband (Steve Brady aka David Eigenberg craves for attention but Miranda is engrossed with other things. Unable to cope with his wife’s rejection….he ends up sleeping with another woman. Their life is shattered when Miranda comes to know the truth.

Charlotte, the most positive of them all is pleasantly surprised when is told that she is pregnant. Her’s is the most un-complicated story of all.

The rest of the movie is about how these four women with the help of each other try and cope with the circumstances they are in and try to move forward.

I like it when women help each other. After a couple of Ekta Kapoor’s Saah Bahu soaps…I was ready to ‘demolish’ our television set with a cricket bat. It is so annoying when you watch a woman hell bent on creating havoc in other woman’s life..either by ‘bedding’ her husband or by pitting the saas against her 😀 It is so pathetic! I hope such ‘bull shit’ will stop very soon.

I did not have great expectations from the movie since I was not a big fan of the show…probably that is what clinched it for me. We sometimes do not realise how difficult it is to be love. We take it for granted. it’s rosy when everything is going for you…but how you stick together when things are not going for you is what you learn over the years. I won’t say the movie is GREAT watch but it is a BEARABLE watch.

My rating: 2.5/5

Weekend Reflections

What a weekend it was! So much happened…so many decisions made which could change our lives forever….but for the good 🙂 I am really happy to share some good news with my readers. S’s got a wonderful job offer so we will be relocating soon!! Yayy!! <:o)

Nyways, like one of my friend pointed out to me yesterday…May was a very eventful month for us. It first started off with S’s birthday…and then follwed with all our Visa extensions…without which getting this job would have been pretty difficult but the icing on the cake was finding a place to set up our new home in Staines.

The chain of events started off on thursday…receiving the offer letter, then our visa documents, submitting his resignation letter and finding a new place….and all this happened in a span of 72 hrs. We were astonished to find a new place in just 3 hours. Now the only aspect I am nervous about is the packing and moving. I am sad when I think of leaving MK. I have made some very good friends here…I am used to the place….it is a beautiful city to live in but ocassionaly one does feel lonely.

Milton Keynes is a new city. It was designated as a new town only in 1967. It is one of the most planned city’s in UK. The best thing I like about this city is the foot paths 😀 where we go for our regular walks. You don’t have the problem of heavy traffic. It’s green, it’s beautiful. MK also has some of the best restaurants…one of our favourites being Nando’s….which I just found out is also in Staines. Double Yayyy <:o) !!!!

Staines is a very good city too. The best thing I like about the place is it’s close proximity to some of the most important cities and tourist spots in UK. Heathrow airport is just 4 miles away, Southall…famous for it’s Indian restaurants and Indian Stores is just 12 miles away…and to top it all…Windsor castle and Eton College are just 8-9 miles away. The Grand Union Canal which branches off from the River Thames flows through the city…which gives it beautiful landscape and recreational facilities with some of the best boating places and picnic spots. Laleham village, which was adjudged an ‘Outstainding Neighbourhood’ during Britain in Bloom, 2007 is just a mile away from where we live. The residents and volunteers also hold various outdoor activites…like Fairs, Carnivals, K9 walks and Village Fairs. I just hope these events are open for all and not just for Laleham village residents.

Anyhoo, I think I can confidently say that Staines is a place to be…..even before moving. Just hope I won’t be disappointed once I get there. With riverside restaurants, good shopping areas and it’s close proximity to London…S and I can have a ball 😀 We love the outdoors. Milton Keynes does have beautful lakes and parks…but we need to get our car out for almost everything. It shouldn’t be the same in Staines. I love walking, going out for drinks and with the High Street just 20 minutes on foot, I am sure to love it!!!! Hope I’ll make new friends 🙂 like I did in MK.

Movies this Weekend

I love weekends…..’cuz that’s when S and I are out and about without a care in the world…watching movies, eating out etc etc. I am especially excited about today. I will be watching Sex and the CityHarold and Kumar escape from Guantanamo Bay 😀 and then Sex and the City. Being a lady, I know most of you would expect me to watch Sex and the City first…but Harold and Kumar seems to be hillarious and I think Kal Penn is fantastic. Was watching House yesterday and I am soo glad it has Kal Penn. He is the ‘funny bone’ of the show…not that he doesn’t involve in serious talk (medical stuff)…otherwise he wouldn’t have been an intern with House…which means he wouldn’t have been in the show…welll nyways…I am just glad he is there. It is nice to see an Indian American actor getting such a good role…..and not one of the stereotypical one…if you know what I mean.

Coming to Sex and the City. Frankly, I was never a great fan of the show. My life does not revolve just around men, clothes and looking good. A real woman’s life never does. I love the clothes…I love the way they dress up and all…but it stops there. Yes…I do understand that it’s tough to be single after a certain age 😛 …but that doesn’t mean you sleep with every other guy and expect your ‘Prince Charming’ to be one of them.

Anyways, I shall write the reviews for both the movies very soon 🙂 Have a great weekend 😀

Happy for No Reason :)

No..I did not get a new job offer, the weather could not have been worse….my head’s throbbing since morning but I am still happy! Isn’t it lovely to be happy for absolutely no reason atall?! We had such a bad long weekend. The weather was horrible. We wanted to go out one of the days but it was windy and rainy 😦 So stayed home and enjoyed a lazzyyy weekend. I broke my own record yesterday by waking up at 2PM 😀 the reason for my headache. Another reason for me to be happy today…I can now write text on my photographs! Yayyyy!!!! (OK..before you laugh at me…let me just clarify that I am NOT a techie…so this is a big deal!!) . Not that I care if people use my pics but I’d not like people basking in my glory 😛

Currently, listening ot AR Rahman’s Jeans…remember…the terrible movie starring Aishwarya Rai and Prashanth…which was the official entry to the Oscars in 1998 (if I am not wrong) ROFLL!!! I cannot even imagine how this movie was selected by our great panel…I am sure the jury was either drunk or bribed by Ashok Amritraj…producer of the movie…oh yea…the tennis player.

One of my fav song’s from the movie..Njoy! (Terrible lyrics since it’s a dub…but enjoy the music)
