Pappu Can’t Dance Saala!

I am soo excited. Read rediff reviews of Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na (JTYJN) and Love Story 2050 and you will know why. JTYJN apparently is jhakaas while the latter seems to be crap and boy am I happy!!!!!!!! I mean….going by the trailers itself…I had my own doubts about Love Story 2050. The Pink Teddy on Priyanka’s shoulders looks absurd, Harman’s dance with the robots…God!!! I mean c’mon….jhatak mataks in a land of robots??? Be realistic!!! Imagine a bhangra number suddenly popping up in Will Smith’s ‘I RObot’ or Bruce Wills’s ‘Fifth Element’. GOsh!! I do like our song & dance numbers but they should be situational.

I desperately want to watch JTYJN. Songs are wonderful…I listen to them atleast 5 times a day…loved Genelia in Bommarillu….Imran seems to have got his acting skills from Uncle Aamir and Abbas Tyrewala is definately one of the most talented guy’s in Bollywood…it cannot get better than this and Pappu Can’t Dance Saala basically rounds up my Philosphy of life 😈

Recipe: Chicken Curry with Coconut Milk

I have been so utterly busy the last few days but the good news is that packing is almost done. Just a few bits here and there which can be dumped into a bin bag the day we leave…which is this friday 😀 I am not so much sad as excited about the move. New place, new people and making a home out of a house sounds very exciting. All this meant, I could only turn a few pages of my book 😦

Last sunday, we not only did most of our packing but also managed to prepare Chicken Biriyani and Chicken Curry with Coconut Milk 😀

S is a ‘pro’ when it comes to cooking Chicken Curry with Coconut Milk. It is one of our favourtie dishes. Goes very well with Plain Rice, Biriyani, Pulao Rice or even Chapathis or Parathas.

Ingredients:

  1. Oil – 6-7 Tbsp
  2. Onions (finely chopped) – 3
  3. Tomatoes (finely chopped) – 2
  4. Chicken – 1/2 Kg (Clean thoroughly with turmeric powder and water)
  5. Canned Coconut Milk – 1
  6. Ginger+Garlic Paste – 1 Tbsp
  7. Cloves – 3
  8. Cinnamon Stick – 3 half a inch pieces
  9. Cardamom (Elaichi) – 3 (split open)
  10. Green Chillies – 5 (Split longitudinally)
  11. Curry Leaves – 6
  12. Cumin Seeds – 1 Tsp
  13. Mustard Seeds – 1 Tsp
  14. Turmeric Powder – A pinch
  15. Salt – According to taste
  16. Coriander – To Garnish

Method

Add oil to a pan or a wok and let it heat.

Later add mustard seeds and let them splutter. Now add cumin seeds and fry. Add curry leaves and green chillies and fry.

Now add onions and mix them on medium flame until they turn golden brown in colour. Then add chopped tomatoes and mix well.

Once tomatoes turn soft, add a pinch of turmeric powder and ginger+garlic paste and mix well. Leave on simmer for atleast 5 minutes mixing it in between

Now add chicken pieces and mix well. Leave it on medium flame for atleast 10 mins mixing frequently in between.

Then add coconut milk and mix thoroughly. Close with a lid and leave for 10 mins mixing inbetween.

By now, you will see alot of water retention. Remove lid and let the curry cook on medium flame. (Do not add any water to the dish).

Approx after 20-30 minutes, water oozed out of the meat should have reduced leaving the curry nice and creamy. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve with rice or chapathis

Henna for your Hair

The one advise (amongst many) my mom gave me as a teenager was ‘Never apply any kind of dye…it damages your hair and and it is  irremediable’ and I don’t know why but this advise I took very very seriously 😉 Hair loss is a major problem among men and women. You constantly listen to people talking about it…what should i do…should I apply egg yolk…any special oils…yoghurt….lemon….?? I say…the best solution is to apply henna with all these ingridients in it along with a few important additions. If you don’t have any plans of going blonde 😉 I advise everyone to give henna a try. Not only does it nourish your hair but leaves it shiny and dark burgundy in colour 🙂

Preparation Time: 20-25 mins

Ingredients: Please remember that the amount of ingridients being added depends on the length of your hair. This method is particularly for those individuals whose length of hair is neck long (or less).

  1. Henna – 3/4 cup (You should be able to find Henna at any Desi Store)
  2. Coffee or Tea Decoction – 350 – 500 ml (aprrox)
  3. Amla Powder (Usiri Podi) – 1/2 cup
  4. Soapnut Powder (Kunkudikaya Podi-optional) – 1/4 cup
  5. Yoghurt (Curd) – 2 Tbps
  6. Fresh Lemon Extract – 2 Tsp

Tools:

  1. A Kadai
  2. A fork to mix ingridients
  3. Henna Brush

Preparation:

Add atleast 3-4 Tbsp of Tea/Coffee powder in 500 ml of water and let it boil.

In the meantime, place henna in kadai and add amla powder, soapnut powder, yoghurt, lemon juice and mix well.

Once you think the decoction has reached it’s maximum concentration, add it to the mixture in the kadai.

Mix well with a fork so as to prevent from any balls from forming

Leave it overnight

You can apply henna yourself. In order to achieve best results, I personally prefer someone else doing it for me because then you don’t miss a spot. Make sure that you (or the person helping you out) divide hair into thin layers and apply henna starting from scalp and ending at the tips. It’s obviously easier for men 😉

Leave it for ateast 2.5 to 3 hrs and wash with shampoo or preferably Soapnut Juice (kunkudikaya rasam). Some people might advise you against washing with shampoo to allow the colour of henna to set in your hair…but I prefer to wash it off because otherwise….you end up with a terribly itchy scalp…leading to an unpleasant night.

(Optional)..Oil you hair with warm coconut (or any other) oil the following day for wonderful results.

So how many times do you need to do this? Well, I suggest apply henna once a week for a month and then apply once a month or atleast once in two months.

Recipe: Chapala Pulusu (Fish Curry)

My Chapala Pulusu (Fish Curry) recipe was long over due. I am a great lover of my mom’s (and aunt’s) fish curry. It’s finger lickin’ good. Till date, I have prepared this dish only twice but it was totally awesome 😀

Back home, we usually prepare fish curry with local find…like Korameenu (not sure what it’s called in english…some say it is the Red Snapper. Any ideas?) and sometimes a Bochha. Since we don’t get any of these in the UK…we had to settle with Salmon.

Preparation Time: 30-45 mins

Ingridients:

  1. A Wok
  2. Salmon (or any fish you desire) – 6 medium sized pcs, approx 3-4 inches each (If you are the one who likes to clean their own fish…you can but whole fish too)
  3. Oil – 6-7 Tbsp
  4. Yoghurt – 2 Tbsp
  5. Onions – 3 (finely chopped)
  6. Tomatoes – 2 (finely chopped)
  7. Tamarind Juice – 35 ml (Take lemon sized tamarind ball and immerse it in 35 ml of warm water)
  8. Green Chillies – 4 (Cut longitudinally)
  9. Ginger Garlic Paste – 1 Tsp
  10. Cumin Seeds – 1 Tsp
  11. Mustard Seeds – 1 Tsp
  12. Turmeric Powder- A Pinch
  13. Asafoetida – A Pinch
  14. Chili Powder – 1 Tsp
  15. Salt – According to taste
  16. Curry Leaves – 6-8 Leaves
  17. Coriander Leaves – Handful for Garnishing

Method:

First, wash pieces of fish thoroughly and marinate them for 10 mins in yoghurt, Salt (1 Tsp) and Turmeric Powder (a pinch). Later, wash and drain

Then add pinch of turmeric, chili powder, ginger garlic paste to the pieces and mix well. Leave aside for 20 mins

In the meantime, chop onions, tomatoes and chillies

Add oil into wok and let it heat. Add cumin and mustard seeds. Once mustards start to splutter, add chillies and curry leaves

Now add onions and allows them to turn golden brown in colour and then add asafoetida and mix well

Add tomatoes, turmeric powder, chili powder and mix well

When tomatoes turn soft, add tamarind juice and salt. Make gravy into a thick consistency. Do not dilute it with the tamarind juice. Remember…you are not making sambar 😀

Leave it to boil. Later add your fish pieces and leave on simmer for 10-13 mins.

Garnish with coriander and it’s ready to serve.

Please note that this is an ‘Andhra Dish’ so could be extremely ‘hot’ for some. Reduce the number of green chillies and it should be fine.

If only I was a Techie :(

The whole day…I have been trying to change the theme of my blog and at the same time include as many widgets as possible…but all in vain 😦 I keep reading blogs from time to time…and most of them are so ‘hip and happening’…with all the latest widgets…and I don’t even know how to get my own domain! DAMMIT! It’s all greek and latin to me.

I started off trying to change the theme of my blog since there were some new ones out @ wordpress…and then I realised I could not have all the widgets I wanted. So ignoring that…I proceeded to getting my own webpage at wordpress which was unsuccessful since I did not understand the stuff about domain registration and all….and then I came across wordpress.org (don’t how different it is to wordpress.com) where they said you could download wordpress and then add themes to your blog….doesn’t necessarily have to be the ones wordpress is hosting…I tried doing that too…but there were atleast 6 folders with various extensions which confused me even more! Now I deleted everything! GRRrr!!! Bloody thing!

I have been sitting in front my laptop for two and a half hours now and my blog still has the boring old theme 😦 As my luck would have it….S is not a techie either…I mean…most men are into IT and all..and he had to go choose Automobile Industry 😛 I should get some tuitions. You can learn stuff by browsing websites and all..but there’s so much information that your head gets messed up at the end of the day.

Death and Destruction. God Help Us!

  1. The first thing I saw on tele yesterday morning was NEWS of the Earthquake in China. Atleast 15,000 people are believed to be dead and thousands missing. Most of the vicitims were children who were caught unaware when their school building collapsed in a matter of seconds. Since China implements ‘one-child’ policy, a generation of children have been lost in some of the worst hit provinces.
  2. Day before, I also learnt of the serial blasts in Jaipur, where alteast 60 people are believed to be dead and atleast 150+ injured. The bombs were placed bicylcles parked in busy market areas. One of the bombs placed at Hanuman Temple was defused by the bomb defusal squad. As far as I remember, it was first Bangalore, then Delhi, then Hyderabad, then Ajmer Dargah and now Jaipur. The Intelligence Bureau (IB) should be re-named ‘The World’s Most Unintelligent Bureau (TWMUB)’. My reaction was that of shock when it happened in Delhi and Hyd. Now, I have somehow got used to the NEWS. They are bound to happen in our country…if not today..then tomorrow. I am sure most of us feel this way…since we live in a country where the security system is in shambles and IB seems to be doing nothing about it! It agitates me!
  3. Atleast 32,000 people are believed to be dead and scores unaccounted for due to Cyclone Nargis in Burma but the Burmese Military Junta is not accepting help from foreign authorities for food and aid…inspite of it’s people dying of starvation and illness. God, please give them some sense. First they force their power on the Burmese and now they don’t care inspite of so much suffering. If you want to help, please donate here. I read somewhere…IT IS ONLY THE POOREST THAT ARE HIT THE HARDEST BY NATURAL CALAMITIES.

My prayers are for the families who have lost their loved ones….to give them strength to cope with their irreplaceable loss. It is difficult…very difficult. But if our thoughts are with the vicitims and their families when we pray…it will be easier.

When such things happen, my faith in God is questioned. Why can’t God stop all this from happening?

Why sometimes I am ashamed to called be an Indian. Please read the article here. And remember, this case is in the NEWS…there are hundreds that aren’t.

The woman was first robbed of her dignity by a couple of men and then again and again by our legal system….by the people who were supposed to protect her. The progress our country makes is worthless unless we learn to protect and respect our women.
